My Only Job In College

Every year around this time, there is an event called Winter Weather Posey. Winter Weather Posey serves a great cause as it is a last ditch effort to go visit the elderly around Morgantown and other close by locations right before the cold weather comes. This event, I heard about through my church but West Virginia University and several other churches around Morgantown come together one day out of the year and go serve.

How this works is we all meet in the church right next Panera Bread and in front of the delicious cupcake place downtown. The organization provides us breakfast and assigns us to teams. Once we finish eating and everyone is finished we get in our teams. The teams usually consist of one to two adults who are the leaders of the group and then 4 to 6 others are college kids (usually). We are given a list of names and then with in those names they have job descriptions and based off that is the material we get at the church to successfully do the job. Once this is done we get on our way.

We then go to each of our assigned elderly people one by one and start working. And when I say work I mean work, as we do everything form raking up leaves, cutting down trees, installing and changing CO2 and fire detectors, and even in some cases do some home improvements. As the very first even I went to I stayed at one house for 5 hours just working to fill in holes that were causing her house to get even colder than usual.

No matter, those five hours were worth it and every other year has been worth it as well. It is honestly something I am going to miss when I graduate college because at the end it makes you feel like you have truly made a difference in someone else's life.

Once we are done and everyone else is done we all come back to that church where they provide lunch for us. Once we finish eating they hand out team awards and then have a drawling with everyones name in it and who ever gets picked gets a gift card or a free ticket to the movies. After this is over we all come together for a prayer at the end and disperse to going back to living our lives.

Going back, It truly has been one of the highlights of my college career and has impacted my life in so many ways. Especially, being how close it is to the two holidays where family is emphasized the most it makes you be thankful and remember where you came form.

I am a laggard when it comes to social media, and believe it or not I had no social media until last year. If it was not for college I...
